Jubilation In Imo As NDDC Distributes Learning Materials, Gadgets To Schools Across The State

There was massive excitement across Imo State on Wednesday, 16th July 2025, as pupils and teachers in both primary and secondary schools received a major boost to education, thanks to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In a landmark move to enhance teaching and learning, the NDDC distributed thousands of electronic and non-electronic materials including over 20,000 textbooks and 3,500 U-lesson education gadgets to schools across oil-producing and non-oil-producing communities in Imo.

The initiative, led by the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State on the NDDC board, Hon Dr Kyrian Chidiebere Uchegbu, saw jubilant scenes as beneficiaries described the gesture as “historic” and long overdue.

“This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and represents a revolutionary step in Nigeria’s public education system,” Dr Uchegbu said. “We are ensuring that rural and urban schools in Imo get access to the same quality resources found in developed nations.”

Primary, junior, and senior secondary schools across Oguta, Egbema, Ohaji, Oru East, Okigwe, Orlu, and Owerri zones received textbooks in core subjects including Mathematics, English, Basic Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Economics.

In partnership with the Renewed Hope Initiative the pet project of Nigeria’s First Lady NDDC also distributed 3,500 U-lesson educational tablets, preloaded with up-to-date syllabi and designed to function both online and offline.

The distribution process was transparent and strictly monitored. Each school received a carton containing 20 devices, with priority given to 20 carefully selected pupils who submitted their bio-data and parental information.

Dr Uchegbu warned against the resale of the items and urged both pupils and teachers to use the materials judiciously to improve academic outcomes. “This is not for show. It’s a promise to uplift education standards and give every Imo child a fighting chance,” he stressed.

Also speaking, NDDC’s Imo State Director, Sir Kelechi Nwelue, explained that the gesture was part of a broader human capital development plan for the Niger Delta, which also includes foreign and local scholarships in medicine, law, technology, and agriculture.

With hundreds of schools benefiting from the intervention, many believe this could mark the beginning of a new era in public education across Imo State.
