Minister Of Information, Idris, Joins Other Nigerians In Mourning Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Nigeria is in mourning following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday, 13th July 2025, in London, United Kingdom.

In a press statement released today, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described Buhari as “a distinguished statesman, patriot, and gentleman soldier” who served the nation with unwavering dedication.

Buhari’s long public service included a tenure as Military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and, decades later, two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. His 2015 electoral victory marked a turning point in the country’s democratic journey.

The late leader was widely known for his strong stance on integrity, discipline, and anti-corruption.

During his administration, he introduced policies focused on national unity, infrastructure development, social investment, and security reforms.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days, from 13th to 20th July, in honour of Buhari.

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, are currently in London to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.

The Federal Government extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, urging the nation to reflect on his legacy of selfless service.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may Almighty Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement concluded.
