FG Outlines Burial Plans For Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has unveiled official burial arrangements for Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London over the weekend.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been set up to coordinate a state burial in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family.

According to the minister, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period beginning Sunday, 13th July 2025.

During this time, national flags will fly at half-mast across the country, and Tuesday, 15th July, has been declared a public holiday.

A delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in London finalising arrangements for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains, which are expected to arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday.

A military ceremony will be held at the airport, after which the body will be transported to Daura for the Jana’iza (funeral prayer) and final interment at his residence.

President Tinubu is expected to personally receive the late president’s body in Katsina.

Twenty-five members of the Federal Executive Council will be present in Katsina and Daura for the burial and third-day prayers on Wednesday, 16th July.

Condolence registers have been opened in all MDAs, Nigerian foreign missions, and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Meanwhile, tributes from world leaders continue to pour in, honouring President Buhari’s legacy as a patriot and a statesman who served Nigeria with “discipline, dignity, and devotion.”
