Senate Urges FG To Honour Late Chief Agunwa Anaekwe With National Monument

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to immortalise the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Agunwa Anaekwe, in recognition of his exemplary service to the nation and his significant role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

During Thursday’s plenary, the Senate adopted a motion moved by Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central) and co-sponsored by seven other senators across party lines.

The motion called for a national public institution or monument to be named after the late Speaker as a lasting tribute to his contributions.

In a solemn atmosphere, senators observed a minute’s silence in honour of Chief Anaekwe and resolved to send a delegation to condole with his family, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Governor of Anambra State.

Senator Umeh described Anaekwe as a visionary and courageous leader who, in 1992 at just 36 years old, became the youngest Speaker of the House during Nigeria’s short-lived Third Republic. “He led with integrity, resisting anti-democratic forces and defending the independence of the legislature at a pivotal time,” Umeh noted.

Though his tenure was cut short by the 1993 military coup, lawmakers acknowledged that Anaekwe’s legacy of patriotism and dedication remains an enduring source of inspiration.

Born in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha LGA of Anambra State, Chief Anaekwe was a lawyer, administrator, entrepreneur, and staunch party man.

Until his passing, he was a respected member of the APC National Caucus and the party’s National Executive Council.

The Senate praised his commitment to democratic values and nation-building even after leaving public office. “He mentored many, upheld justice, and remained a proud son of Anambra and Nigeria,” Senator Umeh said.

The Red Chamber also pledged to work with the House of Representatives and the Anaekwe family to ensure a befitting state burial for the late statesman.
