Tinubu Fully Committed To Local Government Autonomy – Minister Of Information
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s strong commitment to full local government autonomy, describing it as vital for strengthening democracy and driving development at the grassroots.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday during a courtesy visit by the National Forum of Ex-Councillors, the Minister stressed that local councils must function independently—both politically and financially—as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.
“Local government is the closest tier to the people. President Tinubu believes their autonomy is key to ensuring democracy works where it matters most: at the grassroots,” Idris said. “That’s why he supported the Attorney General’s move to seek constitutional clarity from the Supreme Court, which affirmed the right of LGAs to operate independently.”
He lamented how local councils have been weakened over the years, noting that it is time to restore them to their rightful place in governance.
He also called on state governors to collaborate with the President in implementing this constitutional directive.
Idris used the opportunity to urge the Forum to support the administration’s ongoing economic reforms, assuring them that short-term pains will lead to long-term national gains.
“These reforms like fuel subsidy removal and forex unification—are already yielding results, including increased funds for state and local governments.
We must ensure these funds are used to truly benefit the people,” he added.
The Minister thanked the ex-councillors for honouring him with a “People-Oriented Award,” pledging to continue serving with dedication.
Speaking earlier, the Forum’s Assistant Secretary, Mr Cole Michaels, commended Idris for rejuvenating key government agencies and keeping citizens informed about the Tinubu administration’s policies.
The delegation was led by the Forum President, Mr Auwal Kassim Hassan, and included members from across Nigeria.
