Okpebholo Flags Off 14km Road Linking Obaseki’s Hometown, Nine Other Communities In Edo
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has flagged off the construction of a 14-kilometre road in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, linking the hometown of former Governor Godwin Obaseki with nine other surrounding communities.
The project, described as a lifeline for local farmers and traders, is expected to boost economic activity, ease transportation, and reconnect long-isolated areas of the state.
Addressing community members at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development and praised the people for their support during the 2024 elections.
“You voted for your son before, and he did not remember you. If I have a son who will not remember me, I will not pray for him,” the governor said pointedly, drawing cheers from the crowd.
He recalled the community’s cries for better roads during his campaign and promised that the wait was over: “Seven months into our administration, we are here to flag-off the road.
This is why anywhere I go, I can beat my chest and say a new Edo has risen.”
The governor also highlighted Uhunmwonde’s strong representation in his cabinet, with two of the nine commissioners Justice and Energy & Water Resources hailing from the area.
He noted that the new project was just the beginning of more to come.
On a national note, Governor Okpebholo projected confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections, pledging 2.5 million votes from Edo for President Bola Tinubu. “Before now, they said ‘Edo no be Lagos’, but now Edo is becoming Lagos in terms of development,” he said, citing recent achievements like the ongoing flyover project, the Temboga Road, and the now fully motorable Benin-Ekpoma Road.
Earlier in the event, goodwill messages were delivered by community leaders and government officials, all hailing the project as a turning point for the ten benefiting communities.
The road project is expected to significantly transform transportation, facilitate the movement of farm produce, and boost trade within and beyond Uhunmwonde.
