Tinubu Urges Journalists to Champion Unity, Ethics As NUJ Turns 70

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists to embrace ethical reporting and use their platforms to promote national unity and democracy. Represented by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, at the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Gala in Abuja, Tinubu praised the media’s role in shaping the country’s democratic journey.

“Journalists must lead in telling Nigeria’s success stories and safeguarding the truth in the age of fake news and AI,” Idris said. He also announced plans for a UNESCO-backed Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja to strengthen ethical journalism.

Veteran journalist and former governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, challenged the NUJ to root out impostors in the profession. “We must have a credible database of genuine journalists,” he urged, stressing the need for digital transformation in newsrooms.

NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, described the Union’s 70-year journey as a symbol of resilience and national impact. “Our stories must heal and unite, not divide,” he said, calling for responsible reporting, especially in times of conflict.

The event, themed “Celebrating Seven Decades of Journalistic Excellence,” brought together media leaders, government officials, and press veterans. Awards were presented to governors and journalists for their contributions to peacebuilding and press freedom
