ECOWAS Parliament Rallies To Tackle Soaring Unemployment In West Africa

The ECOWAS Parliament has taken a bold step toward addressing rising unemployment in the region, as it wrapped up a key joint committee meeting on Friday, 20 June 2025, in Monrovia, Liberia.

The session brought together members of the committees on Administration, Finance and Budget, Public Accounts, Macroeconomic Policy and Economic Research, as well as Industry and the Private Sector. Their focus: evaluating the impact of ECOWAS’s investment policies on job creation.

Deliberations underscored the urgent need to boost support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), streamline the business environment, and invest in sectors ripe with employment opportunities—particularly industrial agriculture, renewable energy, and digital innovation.

The meeting forms part of ECOWAS’s broader commitment to reducing unemployment, especially among the youth, and championing inclusive economic growth across West Africa.

As the region faces mounting economic challenges, the outcomes of this gathering could set the tone for a more hopeful and empowered future.
