NUJ FCT, Nizamiye Hospital Join Forces for Free Medical Outreach, Applaud FG’s Tariff Removal on Drugs

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, is teaming up with Nizamiye Hospital to offer free medical outreach in June, coinciding with the council’s forthcoming Press Week.

The initiative, aimed at boosting public health awareness and offering free services to journalists in the territory, was sealed during a courtesy visit to the Abuja-based hospital.

NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, led the delegation and emphasised the union’s drive to foster strategic partnerships that support members’ welfare

Welcoming the collaboration, Nizamiye Hospital’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, expressed readiness to support the programme. “All we need is a formal letter outlining the outreach plan, and we will proceed together,” he said.

Abubakar shared the hospital’s success stories from previous outreaches across states like Nasarawa, Katsina, Bauchi, and Imo, where thousands received free treatment across multiple specialties including cardiology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, and dentistry.

He also commended the Federal Government for scrapping import tariffs on pharmaceuticals, calling it a “game-changer” for access to essential medicines.

“It’s not all about business. Medical tourism is still a challenge, and the media can do more to highlight quality healthcare services available right here in Nigeria,” he added.

Comrade Ike praised Nizamiye’s commitment to quality care and called for an expanded partnership beyond the outreach, including media support for IDP-related health initiatives.

“We have platforms that can amplify these efforts. This is just the beginning of a broader collaboration,” she affirmed.

The medical outreach will be a key feature of this year’s NUJ FCT Press Week, marking a significant move in uniting journalism and healthcare advocacy for the greater good.
