The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has flagged off a nationwide tour to garner support for its historic 70th anniversary celebrations, beginning with visits to major media houses in Abuja.
The Anniversary Planning Committee led by its chairman, Dr Abimbola Oyetunde, who is also the Deputy President of NUJ, visited TVC, Trust Media Group, and Arise Television.
They were warmly received by top executives of the organisations.
Dr Oyetunde praised the media outfits for their consistent contributions to journalism and expressed optimism about the forthcoming anniversary, describing it as a monumental event, the first of its kind for the Union.
According to her, our 70th anniversary is not just a celebration; it is a moment to honour the heroes of our profession and the institutions that have stood by the NUJ, noting the Union’s enduring role in promoting democracy and social justice since its formation in 1955.
She appealed to the media houses for robust publicity to make the celebration a resounding success.
Responding, the media executives, Ayodele Ozugbakun of TVC, Hamza Idris of Daily Trust, and Adebayo Awosemo of Arise TV, pledged full support, commending the NUJ’s legacy of championing ethical journalism and nation-building.
Other members of the visiting delegation included veteran journalist Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, NUJ FCT Council Chair Comrade Grace Ike, and Assistant National Secretary Comrade Tita Onyebuchi Nze.
The visits featured the presentation of advocacy letters and group photographs.
The NUJ @70 celebration is slated for 21st June 2025.
