The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

In a condolence message signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria hailed the late Pontiff as a global moral compass whose papacy was defined by humility, justice, and tireless advocacy for the poor and oppressed.

“Pope Francis’ voice for the marginalised from refugees to victims of conflict ¹found deep resonance in Nigeria,” the statement read, adding that his calls for peace and interfaith unity served as a beacon of hope for many.

The government also recalled the Pope’s historic 2022 apology for the Church’s role in colonial-era injustices and praised his unwavering efforts for global reconciliation, especially in Africa and other regions in crisis.

Nigeria joined Catholics worldwide in mourning the loss and extended condolences to the Vatican and the people of Argentina, describing Pope Francis as “an extraordinary pontiff” whose legacy will live on.

“We pray for the repose of his soul and for the enduring impact of his message of mercy and care for humanity,” the statement concluded.
