Nigerian Catholic priests have raised the alarm over an alleged plan by the Federal Government to arrest Bishop Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe of Makurdi Diocese for speaking out on killings and insecurity in the Middle Belt.

The Nigerian Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA), Makurdi Diocese, expressed outrage over reports that Bishop Anagbe, currently on an overseas trip, may be targeted upon his return for his outspoken stance against violence, terrorism, and herder attacks ravaging Benue and Plateau States.

In a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Terfa Beba, the priests warned that any move to silence the Bishop would be a direct attack on truth, freedom of speech, and religious liberty.

“Bishop Anagbe has consistently stood for justice and peace, giving a voice to the voiceless.

Our people are being killed, displaced, and their homes destroyed. He has only spoken the truth,” the statement read.

The priests also disclosed that Rev. Fr. Remigius Ihyula received a message from an embassy in Abuja warning of a possible arrest warrant for the Bishop.

They called on the government to guarantee Bishop Anagbe’s safety and urged the international community, religious bodies, and Civil Society to remain vigilant.

“The voice of the shepherd must not be silenced. Advocacy for justice is not a crime,” they declared.
