The fight for gender equality is not just about recognition but about action.

As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025 under the theme “Accelerate Action,” the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, is leading the charge in pushing for policies and initiatives that create real change, particularly for women in rural communities.

Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, highlighted the undeniable contributions of women in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, and social landscape.

Yet, despite these achievements, barriers still exist especially for rural women, who continue to struggle with limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

With the sub-theme “Amplifying the Voice of Rural Women,” NAWOJ FCT is calling for urgent interventions to break these barriers.

“We acknowledge the strides we’ve made, but we also recognise the challenges that remain,” Ikpang stated.

She emphasised the need for government agencies, traditional leaders, corporate organisations, and the media to take bold steps in promoting policies and programmes that empower women.

As part of its commitment, NAWOJ FCT vows to leverage media advocacy, strategic partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that women’s voices are not just heard but acted upon.

“Together, let’s accelerate action and amplify the voices of rural women,” Ikpang urged.

The call to action is clear, gender equality cannot wait. The time to act is now.
