In a move to nurture young talents and secure the future of weightlifting in Nigeria, the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has launched a grassroots development programme aimed at introducing the sport to schoolchildren.

As part of this initiative, the federation recently conducted a weightlifting demonstration at Lead British International School, Gwarinpa, Abuja, during the school’s inter-house sports competition.

The event provided students with firsthand experience of the sport, sparking excitement and curiosity about weightlifting as a career path.

Speaking at the event, NWF President, Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, stressed the importance of catching them young to sustain Nigeria’s dominance in weightlifting.

He praised the enthusiasm displayed by both students and teachers, assuring that the federation will expand the programme nationwide, targeting more schools across the country.

“Weightlifting has taken many Nigerians to global heights, and we want to ensure that young talents are discovered and nurtured early,” Dr. Abdul said. “With champions like Lawal Rufiat and Umofia Edidiong making Nigeria proud, we believe these young ones can also achieve greatness if given the right platform.”

With this initiative, the NWF is laying the foundation for future weightlifting stars, ensuring that Nigeria remains a force to reckon with in the sport.
