The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against cancer through global initiatives and strengthened healthcare systems.

Speaking at the 2025 World Cancer Day commemoration in Abuja, WHO Country Representative, Dr. Walter Mulombo, praised the Federal Ministry of Health and other stakeholders for their efforts in cancer prevention, treatment, and awareness.

This year’s theme, “United by Unique”, emphasises a people-centered approach, recognising that while each cancer journey is different, collective action can drive progress.

Dr. Mulombo highlighted WHO’s advocacy for initiatives such as the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC), the Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative (CCEI), and the Global Breast Cancer Initiative.

He commended Nigeria for adopting these programmes under the Health Sector Renewal Initiative through a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp).

Reaffirming WHO’s commitment, he urged stakeholders to continue supporting government-led efforts to improve cancer care, ensuring that individuals, families, and communities receive holistic and responsive healthcare.
