The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has lauded the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his notable contributions to infrastructural development in the capital city.

In a communiqué issued after its historic first Congress under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, the Council highlighted the Minister’s efforts while urging for more robust economic reforms to ease the challenges faced by residents.

The Congress, held on Saturday, 25th January, 2025 at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, brought together over 400 journalists, including past leaders of the Council and NAWOJ.

Comrade Ike, in her address, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to unity and progress, calling the gathering “an opportunity to collectively shape the future of our profession.”

The Congress raised concerns about the rising cost of living, erratic power supply, and worsening insecurity across the nation.

Members lamented the impact of skyrocketing prices of goods and services on Nigerians and called on the Federal Government to implement measures to alleviate the burden on citizens.

“The frequent disruption of electricity and water supply is crippling businesses and worsening the daily lives of residents,” the communiqué stated, urging immediate action to restore basic amenities.

On security, the NUJ FCT Council expressed alarm over increasing reports of ritual killings and other crimes, attributing them to the country’s economic struggles.

It called for collaborative efforts to address the twin challenges of economic instability and insecurity.

The Congress ended with a renewed commitment to the unity and advancement of the union, pledging to prioritise the welfare of its members.
