Davos 2025: Tuggar Champions Africa’s UN Security Council Membership, Advocates for Nigeria’s Leadership

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 21, 2025, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, made a compelling case for Africa’s permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking at a panel discussion themed “Africa’s Momentum,” Tuggar emphasised Africa’s exclusion despite the continent being central to 60% of the Council’s resolutions.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s suitability to lead Africa on the global stage, citing its contributions to Africa’s liberation struggles, its role in regional peace and security, and its track record as a non-threatening power with strong neighborly ties.

He stressed Nigeria’s historical support for South Africa during apartheid and its current soft-power initiatives, such as deploying professionals to African and Caribbean nations through the Technical Aid Corps.

Tuggar also addressed Nigeria’s aspirations for G20 membership, noting the upcoming summit in South Africa as a critical moment for Africa.

He called for renewed commitments from developed nations to support Africa’s energy transition and economic development, highlighting Nigeria’s leadership in championing fair global tax reforms and advocating for the equitable use of Special Drawing Rights.

According to a statement by the Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy to the Minister, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the minister argued that with its growing population, economic strength, and leadership in Africa, Nigeria deserves a permanent seat in the UN Security Council and a voice at the G20, ensuring the continent’s concerns are effectively represented on the global stage.
