The Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Grace Ike, has asked pressure groups and Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria to lobby the National Assembly to pass Gender-Sensitive Laws that will protect and promote the rights of women in all spheres of society irrespective of class or tribe
The Chairman who was speaking at the 2024 International Women’s Day Celebration organised for women Journalists tagged “Together: Ensure Inclusivity, Loud Her Voice” by the Female Journalist Network in collaboration with the FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists in Abuja called on all especially journalists, to continue to amplify the voices of women, to ensure that every woman is given the opportunity to speak and be heard.
Ike, who is also the Vice Chairman of the NUJ Correspondent Chapel, FCT Council, counted herself, a testament, to the progress women have made in breaking barriers, shattering glass ceiling and making their voices heard in a profession traditionally dominated by men.
She said that inclusivity is not just a buzzword; but a fundamental principle that must be upheld in all aspects of society and the lowest standard in the struggle
According to the Press Corps Chairman, if women support women, their words will become so powerful that it will lead to action that will pull all to the promised land, as the journey is a collective one.
She noted that it is not enough for women to succeed individually; but must reach back and lift up fellow sisters, create space and advantages for them all to thrive.
This, she said could be done through mentorship, sponsorship, or simply offering a listening ear, but must actively support and uplift one another and acknowledged the crucial role of women journalists in shaping the understanding of the world and amplifying voices of women through their reportage.
She called for synergy in working to create a future where women in journalism can thrive, advocacy is effective, and gender-sensitive laws ensure equality for all.
