The European Union, EU, says it does not and will not recognize the authorities resulting from the coup in Niger and for this, in addition to the immediate cessation of budget support, it has suspended sine die with immediate effect all cooperation actions in the security field.

EU, in very strong terms, reiterated its earlier calls for the full and complete restoration, without delay, of constitutional order in the country, saying it fully associates self with the declarations of ECOWAS, its African and international partners in this regard.

A statement signed by EU’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, noted President Bazoum was democratically elected; and as such, remains the only legitimate President of Niger hence his release should be unconditional and without delay.

The statement stressed that the EU holds the putschists responsible for his safety and that of his family emphasising that the announcement by the putschists of the suspension of the constitution and the dissolution of democratic institutions weakens the State and the people of Niger, whose peace, stability and security must be preserved.

It further hinted that in coordination with the President of the European Council, the body will this weekend, continue the numerous contacts already underway in order to achieve result while pledging support to future decisions of ECOWAS including the adoption of sanctions.

According to the statement, this unacceptable attack on the integrity of Niger’s republican institutions will not remain without consequences for the partnership and cooperation which binds the European Union and Niger, in all different aspects.
