Stakeholders in the education sector have agreed that laying strong foundations in the primary and secondary schools in Nigeria, will be a game changer for tertiary education in the country.
Speaker after speaker at the inaugural Professor Julius Okojie lecture series on what next in the nations university system in Abuja, called for a tweak in the schools curriculum to meet the present day demands in education.
According to the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Chris Maiyaki, it is solely for this reason that the NUC employs the assistance of university managers to tailor the curriculum according to their needs.
In her lecture on what next in the Nation’s University system, Professor Ameze Guobadia, highlighted different approaches to strengthening Nigeria’s University system to include among other things, digitalisation of schools library, financial autonomy, and improved curriculum while, a former Deputy Executive Secretary of NUC, Mr. Akinbode Agbaoye, advocated proper funding of universities and their freedom as the key to better university system.
