The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has refuted the alleged plan by its chairman to contest presidential election as untrue. The commission described as a preposterous proposition, belief or innuendoes that INCE Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, may soon join the Presidential race as it will not happen.

Reacting to such innuendoes, in some quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if INEC Chairman joins Presidential race or people urging him to do so, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in a statement said the chairman of INEC remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections.

According to the statement, his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles.

The statement emphasised that the Chairman will continue to discharge his responsibilities without affection for, or ill will against, any political party or candidate.
