CCAN Hosts IGP Disu, Security Chiefs For Crucial 2027 Election Talks

A free and fair election depends not only on the security of polling stations but also on the information voters receive before casting their ballots.

With fake news, manipulated content and election-related violence posing growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy, security chiefs and media professionals are preparing to confront the challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At the centre of the conversation will be the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who is expected to lead security stakeholders as Chief Host of the 2026 Annual Conference and Awards of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN

The conference, scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, at the Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja, will examine how the media and security agencies can work together to prevent misinformation and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

With the theme, “Navigating Security Challenges in the 2027 Election: The Role of the Media in Combating Fake News,” the gathering comes amid concerns that false reports, manipulated narratives and inflammatory content could heighten political tension, incite violence and undermine electoral credibility.

The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, will deliver the keynote address, focusing on information integrity, responsible journalism and the media’s responsibility in protecting democratic stability.

CCAN National Chairman, Festus Fifen, said the conference was designed to encourage stronger collaboration between the media and security institutions ahead of the elections

He noted that securing the country during an election period required more than the deployment of security personnel, stressing that the information space must also be protected against falsehoods capable of triggering unrest.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, the responsibility of securing Nigeria cannot be left to security agencies alone.

The media has a critical role to play in ensuring that accurate information prevails over fake news, misinformation and narratives capable of triggering tension and threatening national peace,” Fifen said.

He added that the conference would provide an opportunity for journalists and security agencies to exchange ideas, strengthen professional relationships and develop practical strategies for tackling information-related threats before, during and after the elections.

The event will also feature an awards presentation to recognise individuals and institutions whose contributions have advanced national security, public service and professional excellence.

CCAN has invited journalists, security agencies, government officials, civil society organisations, policymakers and members of the public to participate in the discussions.

The conference begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at the Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja.
