As security threats continue to challenge West Africa, Germany has reaffirmed its confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to promote regional stability, describing the country as an anchor of peace and security in the sub-region.
German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefan Rossel, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
Rossel described Nigeria as a strategic partner of Germany, pledging his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in defence and security.
He said sustained cooperation between both countries would create opportunities for mutually beneficial projects and initiatives, while reaffirming Germany’s interest in deepening its longstanding partnership with Nigeria.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the German Technical Advisory Group (G-TAG) to brief the CDS on the progress of its ongoing training support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Responding, General Oluyede expressed appreciation to the German government for its continued support, particularly in strengthening the professional and operational capabilities of Nigerian troops.
He highlighted G-TAG’s contributions to the development of the Mechatronics School, Combat Tactical Care Training and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Training, alongside other capacity-building programmes and material support.
The CDS called for expanded defence cooperation, urging Germany to provide more opportunities for strategic and advanced military courses for Nigerian officers and soldiers.
He said specialised training and professional development remained critical to improving the Armed Forces’ ability to respond effectively to evolving security threats.
Oluyede assured the German delegation of Nigeria’s readiness to consolidate the existing partnership and explore further areas of cooperation in pursuit of shared security interests.
The engagement highlights growing defence ties between Nigeria and Germany, with both countries seeking to strengthen military capacity and contribute to peace and stability in West Africa.
