Nine people, including a 10-year-old child and an elderly man aged 61, have regained their freedom after Nigerian Army troops disrupted suspected bandit activities in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The victims, who included seven people reportedly held captive for several months, were rescued during sustained military operations by troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

The operations also led to the recovery of 108 stolen livestock, comprising 34 cows and 74 rams.

The Army said the operation followed distress reports that suspected bandits had invaded communities in the Danko general area and Sabon Tunga Village, abducting residents and rustling livestock.

Responding to the distress call, troops swiftly mobilised to the affected area and engaged the suspected bandits, forcing them to flee and abandon their captives.

Two victims, identified as Barbuga Bawashe, 26, and Barka Dakaji, 61, were rescued during the encounter, while the troops recovered the 108 livestock.

In a related operation on the same day, seven other victims escaped from their captors amid sustained military pressure in Sabon Tunga and Binoni villages.

They were identified as Muhammad Dogonta, 60; Zakari Yahu, 32; Basara Sheu, 10; Adam Shehu, 12; Hatsat Umar, 14; Albaria Hamsu, 12; and Yehusa Lawali, 35.

The Army said the nine rescued victims had been handed over to the District Head of Unashi for onward reunion with their families.

The latest operation highlights ongoing military efforts under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to dismantle criminal networks, rescue kidnapped persons and recover stolen property across the North-West.

For the rescued victims and their families, the operation marks an end to captivity and a long-awaited opportunity for reunion.
