Gas Shortage, Low Water Levels Worsen Nigeria’s Power Crisis – NISO

Millions of Nigerian households struggling with erratic electricity supply may have to endure more hours in darkness as gas shortages and reduced water levels at hydroelectric reservoirs continue to undermine power generation.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says the two challenges are primarily responsible for the current decline in electricity generation on the national grid.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, NISO explained that limited gas supplies have prevented affected thermal power stations from operating at their available capacities, while reduced water inflows into reservoirs have weakened output from hydroelectric power stations.

The resulting drop in electricity generation has reduced the volume of power allocated to Distribution Companies (DisCos), leaving consumers with fewer hours of electricity and increased load shedding across distribution networks.

NISO noted that the impact varies across the country, depending on available generation and the corresponding allocations to individual distribution companies.

Acknowledging the difficulties faced by electricity consumers nationwide, the system operator said it was working towards diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix to strengthen electricity supply security.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability, optimising available power generation and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid despite prevailing operational constraints.

However, NISO did not provide a timeline for when electricity generation and supply would improve.
