INEC Unveils Tough Security Plan To Protect 2027 Voters
For millions of Nigerians preparing to vote in 2027, the safety of polling units and election workers remains crucial to exercising their democratic rights, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen its security arrangements ahead of the general election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced a new intelligence-led security framework, tagged “ICCES Tentacle”, designed to protect voters, electoral staff and materials from threats and violence.
Speaking at a readiness assessment meeting with staff in Gombe on Tuesday, Amupitan said the framework would extend security coordination from national and state headquarters to local government areas and registration centres.
The plan focuses on identifying potential security threats early, protecting election personnel and technology, and ensuring voters can access polling units safely.
Amupitan also disclosed that joint security operations had uncovered an alleged plot by criminal kingpins to target ad hoc election staff and National Youth Service Corps members. He said the principal suspects had been arrested and were facing prosecution.
He warned that anyone who threatened or harmed election workers would be tracked down and brought to justice.
The INEC chairman said the commission would convene a National Election Security Conference in Abuja to finalise security arrangements for high-risk areas.
Meanwhile, the commission has published the Preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general election online at https://display.inecnigeria.org, following its physical display nationwide from 9 to 15 October.
The online register allows registered voters to inspect their details, while INEC processes claims and objections ahead of the publication of the final register scheduled for 15 December 2026.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for 16 January 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on 6 February.
Amupitan urged electoral officials, traditional rulers and political leaders to support peaceful participation, counter misinformation and help ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised.
