Hoba Community Unites Through Sports At 2026 Abuja Development Day
Beyond competition, sport can be a powerful tool for building stronger families, nurturing young talent and deepening community ties.
That spirit was on full display as the Hoba Development Association (HDA), Abuja, brought together men, women, youths and children for its 2026 Sports Day at Package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Despite heavy rainfall that delayed proceedings and pushed activities into the evening, members of the Hoba community turned out in large numbers for a day of sport, social interaction and team-building.
Participants competed in volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, football and aerobics, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.
President of HDA Abuja, Bitrus Usmana, said the association would go beyond organising the annual event by identifying and supporting promising young athletes.
“We identify one particular child who is so good at volleyball. We will try to train or create an opportunity for the child where he can learn more and be coached, and then link him up with clubs.”
The association’s Women Leader, Rejoice Yaduma, said the event had become an important avenue for strengthening family bonds and promoting unity.
Retired Wing Commander Eli Waziri, an elder and stakeholder, said the initiative could help discover future sporting stars while providing positive examples for younger members of the community.
Youth Leader and Chairman of the Planning Committee, Tsahyel Jediel, described this year’s turnout as the best so far, citing the enthusiasm and participation of members.
For the children and youths, the day was simply about having fun. From first-time volleyball players to badminton enthusiasts, participants called for the initiative to continue.
The Hoba Development Association, Abuja, is the umbrella socio-cultural association of the Hoba community, promoting peaceful coexistence among its people and with other ethnic nationalities through sports and other community-building initiatives.
