Customs Lift 2026 NUJ FCT Football Trophy After 3-0 Win Over NIS
Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been crowned champions of the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Football Tournament after a commanding 3-0 victory over the National Institute for Sports (NIS) in Abuja.
Captain Mikail Abubakar opened the scoring at the Area 3 football pitch, firing his fifth goal of the tournament to finish as the competition’s top scorer.
NIS, making their debut in the tournament, attempted to respond before half-time, but Customs’ defence held firm to preserve the lead.
The Customs side, led by Controller General Bashir Adeniyi Adewale, returned after the break with greater intensity. Familola Fatai doubled the advantage before Femi Omodara completed the scoring to seal a convincing victory.
Abubakar’s impressive campaign earned him both the Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player awards, while his teammate Charles Ahur was named Best Goalkeeper after an outstanding tournament.
Ahur had earlier saved two penalties in Customs’ semi-final victory over the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before keeping a clean sheet in the final.
In the third-place match, defending champions Nigeria Air Force defeated 2025 runners-up NDLEA 2-0.
The NUJ FCT team received the Fair Play Award at the one-week tournament, which featured eight teams: NUJ FCT Council, NCS, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Air Force, NDLEA, Nigeria Police Force, NTA and FCT Football Coaches Association.
The organising committee Chairman, Comrade Ndubueze Chidoka, praised the participating teams, particularly NTA and NIS for making their debut.
“Customs are truly champions,” Chidoka said, noting that NCS won all five matches and that the quality of competition was high.
NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, represented by her Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, also commended the teams for displaying sportsmanship throughout the competition.
“Sports is indeed a unifier,” Ndambabo said, highlighting the camaraderie among players and participating organisations.
The closing ceremony also recognised the Controller General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adeniyi Adewale, represented by Deputy Comptroller General Samuel Onikeku, and the Director General of NIS, Rt. Hon. Comrade Phillip Shaibu, represented by Institute Librarian Dr Omoh Asenokhai, for their contributions to sports development.
