Brig-Gen Habila’s Two-Decade Investment In Nigerian Grassroots Football
Behind many Nigerian footballers who make it beyond the grassroots are individuals whose contributions rarely make the headlines.
For more than two decades, Brigadier-General Yahaya Pela Habila has quietly invested in that often-overlooked pipeline, supporting young players, clubs and competitions without seeking the spotlight.
The senior Nigerian Army Finance Corps officer, currently Director of Budget at Army Headquarters, has sponsored youth competitions and grassroots tournaments across Nigeria, while providing financial and material support to players, coaches and clubs.
During his tour of duty at 82 Division, Enugu, Habila sponsored the Dragon Football Competition for youths and became a notable supporter of Rangers International.
His interventions have also extended to other parts of the country.
He was a key backer of Gombe United FC during the club’s run to the Federation Cup finals in 2012 and 2013.
He also provided logistics equipment to Lobi Stars FC, Makurdi, and supported the family of the club’s late coach, Solomon Ogbeide.
Beyond club football, Habila has helped young Nigerian players secure opportunities with clubs abroad, with football agent Chukwuma Udofia Ayaya describing him as a selfless supporter who has helped players pursue their dreams without demanding anything in return.
Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in September 1998 as a member of the 45 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Habila has held strategic appointments spanning finance, audit, budgeting and pensions administration in the Nigerian Army.
He holds a PhD in Security and Strategic Studies from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, as well as postgraduate qualifications in security and development, security and strategic studies and management.
He also holds a BSc in Economics from the Nigerian Defence Academy and a Professional Accounting Certificate from the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos.
A graduate of the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, Habila’s interests include reading, writing, football, volleyball, farming and travelling.
His story reflects the role that private, sustained support can play in keeping Nigeria’s grassroots football system active, one tournament, player and club at a time.
