Disu Honours Arase, Calls For Stronger Police Veterans’ Support
The legacy of a police officer should not end with retirement, and the Nigeria Police Force is seeking to keep that principle alive as it honours the late Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase.
The current IGP, Olatunji Disu, on Monday joined former police chiefs, senior officers and associates of Arase at a public lecture in Abuja to mark the first anniversary of his death.
The lecture, themed “Policing, Good Governance, and National Development: The Strategic Role of Police Veterans in Building a Secure Nigeria,” focused on the role of retired officers in strengthening policing and national development.
Disu described Arase as a leader who understood policing as a responsibility to protect lives, uphold human dignity and build public confidence.
He said the late police chief’s legacy of service, intellect, integrity and humanity would endure.
Chairman of the Police Veterans’ Foundation Board of Trustees, DIG Mohammed Yesufu (Rtd), called for the establishment of a Veterans Affairs Department within the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen support for retired officers and extend the foundation’s work.
The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Chief Mutiat Disu, also paid tribute to Arase, highlighting his support for children of fallen officers and efforts to address the socio-economic challenges confronting retired personnel.
Former IGPs Sunday Ehindero and Mohammed Abubakar, Arase’s widow, Mrs Agharese Arase, senior serving officers and retired police personnel attended the event, which ended with the presentation of awards to beneficiaries.
Participants also urged the Police Veterans’ Foundation to be developed into a lasting institution that would preserve Arase’s commitment to the welfare of police veterans.
