Kwara Expands Integrated Care To Improve Maternal and Family Health

For many women, getting the care they need can mean multiple visits to different health facilities.

Kwara State is seeking to change that with an integrated approach that brings several essential services together in one visit.

The state is supporting the “One Visit, Full Care” model, which enables women to access sexual and reproductive health, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical disease services during a single visit.

The initiative is being supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Nigeria, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and Jhpiego, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Kwara State Ministry of Health, with funding support from the Global Fund.

The approach is aimed at reducing missed diagnoses, cutting down the time women spend seeking care and improving access to quality health services.

Nigeria continues to face serious maternal health challenges, with a maternal mortality ratio of 512 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Only 63 per cent of pregnant women receive antenatal care from a skilled provider, while mother-to-child transmission contributes to 14 per cent of new HIV infections.

Kwara State First Lady, Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, has reaffirmed her commitment to expanding integrated health services across the state.

The model is now prepared for expansion to Anambra, Ebonyi and Gombe states, as efforts intensify to make essential healthcare more accessible to women and families.
