TCN, AfDB Advance Battery Storage Plan To Strengthen Nigeria’s Power Grid
Nigeria’s quest for a more stable electricity supply received a boost on Monday as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), commenced a two-day validation workshop on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Feasibility Study in Abuja.
The workshop, which runs from 8 to 9 June 2026, brings together key stakeholders to review and validate findings aimed at deploying battery energy storage technology to improve grid stability and enhance power system performance across the country.
Speaking at the event, TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Engineering, Engr. Mojeed Akintola, urged participants to make meaningful contributions to ensure the study reflects the realities of Nigeria’s power sector.
He described the BESS initiative as a timely and forward-looking intervention, noting that the project, being implemented in partnership with AfDB, is designed to tackle system instability and strengthen grid balancing as Nigeria works towards a more reliable electricity supply.
Also speaking, the Lead Consultant for the project, Prof. Tajudeen Humble Sikiru of AfDB, stressed the importance of thoroughly scrutinising every aspect of the policy documents under review.
He said the validation process is critical and expressed confidence that the workshop’s outcome would play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s electricity sector’s future.
The Battery Energy Storage System is expected to provide critical support for power transmission operations by storing excess electricity and releasing it when demand rises, thereby improving efficiency and reliability within the national grid.
