Abia Emerges West Africa’s Para Badminton Hub As Association Hails Otti’s Sports Revolution

Abia State’s growing reputation as a centre for para badminton in Africa received another boost as the Abia State Badminton Association (ABBA) declared the state the “home of Para Badminton in West Africa”, citing Governor Alex Otti’s investments in sports development and infrastructure.

The association made the declaration at its Second Quarterly Meeting in Umuahia, where members reviewed progress and unveiled plans to expand both able-bodied and para badminton across the state.

ABBA congratulated Governor Otti on his third anniversary in office, commending his administration’s commitment to sports infrastructure, youth empowerment and efforts to position Abia as a leading sporting destination in Nigeria.

Members also praised the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Nwaobilor Ananaba, for his support of the sector.

The association noted that para badminton has witnessed remarkable growth under the current administration, attributing the progress to the governor’s decision to constitute the association’s board and sponsor athletes and officials to international competitions.

ABBA highlighted the achievements of Abia’s para badminton stars, including Chukwuebuka Eze, Chinyere Okoro, Jeremiah Nnanna and Gift Chukwuemeka, who have earned continental and global recognition.

Looking ahead, the association announced plans to strengthen grassroots participation through badminton clubs in sports centres and schools across the state, while also training more coaches, umpires and technical officials.

ABBA further disclosed that the 6th Annual National Para Badminton Championship will hold before the end of 2026.

Preparations are also underway for the second edition of the Abia International Para Badminton Championship, which attracted participants from 16 countries during its maiden edition last year.

The association pledged to attract greater private sector investment to complement government funding and accelerate the development of world-class badminton facilities in the state.
