ECOWAS Moves To Strengthen Nigeria-Cameroon Border Trade Corridor

Efforts to deepen regional integration and improve the movement of goods and people across Africa’s borders received a boost as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) began a strategic monitoring and inspection mission at the Nigeria-Cameroon Joint Border Post in Ekok/Mfum.

The mission is coordinated by the ECOWAS Directorate of Transport to assess the operational efficiency of the border facility and identify areas requiring improvement to enhance trade and mobility between West and Central Africa.

Led by Dr Ashoke Maliki, Head of Road and Railways at the ECOWAS Directorate of Transport, on behalf of the Director of Transport, Mr Chris Appiah, the team is evaluating border procedures, infrastructure functionality and inter-agency coordination mechanisms at the Joint Border Post.

According to ECOWAS, the inspection will also focus on trade facilitation measures, cargo and passenger clearance timelines, as well as compliance with regional agreements governing the free movement of persons, goods and services.

The commission noted that the mission is designed to uncover operational bottlenecks affecting cross-border transport and commerce while engaging border agencies and stakeholders to develop practical recommendations aimed at improving efficiency, security and seamless connectivity along the corridor.

Strategically positioned along the Nigeria-Cameroon border, the Ekok/Mfum Joint Border Post serves as a critical commercial and transit route linking West and Central Africa, making it a key component in regional economic integration efforts.
