Nigeria Seeks Stronger Global South Alliance At CELAC Forum In Colombia
As global power dynamics continue to shift, countries in the Global South are increasingly looking inward, seeking strength in unity, shared history, and collective ambition.
Nigeria has renewed its push for deeper ties between Africa and Latin America, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, calling for expanded cooperation across key sectors at the CELAC–Africa High-Level Forum in Bogotá, Colombia.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Tuggar described the forum as a timely and strategic platform for fostering dialogue amid rising global uncertainty.
He stressed that conflicts, regardless of where they occur, have far-reaching consequences for developing nations, urging leaders to work together to shape a more stable and equitable global order.
“We live in extraordinary times,” Tuggar said, warning against the growing fragmentation of the international system and calling for a stronger, united voice among Global South countries.
The Minister outlined Nigeria’s priorities, highlighting opportunities in education, agriculture, energy, solid minerals, and technology.
He emphasised the need for Africa and Latin America to actively participate in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, warning that both regions must not be sidelined in future global advancements.
Tuggar also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international cooperation, pointing to the Technical Aid Corps programme, which has deployed skilled professionals to Caribbean countries for decades.
He said Nigeria remains open to expanding partnerships in trade, healthcare, culture, and climate resilience.
On the economic front, he showcased Nigeria’s vast market potential and ongoing efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency, with fertiliser production projected to reach 6.5 million tonnes this year.
He further called for stronger cultural and creative exchanges, noting their role in building lasting people-to-people connections, while also advocating joint action on climate change, improved healthcare access, and the repatriation of illicit financial flows.
According to a statement signed by the SA Media and Communications Strategy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the CELAC–Africa High-Level Forum, held from March 20 to 21, 2026, brought together leaders from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean to deepen cooperation and unlock new pathways for shared prosperity.
