Nigeria Aquatics Federation Reschedules Youth Swimming Event, Postpones National Championship After President’s Death
The Nigerian aquatic sports community is adjusting its calendar as it mourns the loss of one of its most passionate promoters and administrators.
The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has announced the rescheduling of its youth-focused programme, “Swim to the Future,” and the postponement of the National Junior Swimming Championship tagged “Swim for Life.”
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Department, the federation said the decision follows the passing of its President, Dr. Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu, who died on March 7, 2026.
According to the federation, “Swim to the Future,” which was originally scheduled to hold on the same day as Dr. Dunkwu’s death, will now take place on a new date in April 2026 in honour of the late president.
The federation described Dr. Dunkwu as the sole sponsor of the initiative and a strong advocate for youth development and the growth of aquatic sports in Nigeria.
“Swim to the Future” was designed to nurture young talents and expand grassroots participation in swimming across the country.
Meanwhile, the National Junior Swimming Championship, “Swim for Life,” initially slated for April 2 to April 4, 2026 in Lagos, has been postponed to allow for improved logistical planning and coordination.
The federation said new dates for both events would be announced through its official communication channels.
NAqF also thanked stakeholders, participating clubs, athletes, coaches, partners and the media for their understanding during what it described as a reflective moment for Nigeria’s aquatic sports community.
