Imo Killings: Police Hunt Gang Members After ‘Acid’ Is Killed

The killing of a suspected bandit kingpin in Imo State could open a new chapter in investigations into a string of murders and attacks that have unsettled communities in Ohaji/Egbema over the past two years.
The Nigeria Police Force said Ojiogu Elumah Martin, alias “Acid”, was killed during a gun battle with operatives of the Special Tactical Squad, Force Intelligence Department (STS-FID) at his hideout in Ohaji/Egbema in the early hours of August 6.
Police said the operation was linked to investigations into the April 10 killing of HRH Eze Barrister Paulinus Ekwueme, Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom, and five others.
According to the Force, Acid opened fire when the operatives arrived, triggering a gun battle that lasted several hours.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, three magazines and 56 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
But the operation is far from over. Several alleged members of Acid’s group reportedly escaped into the forest, while police continue investigating the group’s alleged involvement in multiple killings between 2024 and 2026.
The investigation also covers the alleged murder of Emeka Ebere Nwaele in May, the killing of other residents and an attack in which a business premises was allegedly set ablaze in July.
Police said four suspects had previously been arrested and two other alleged members neutralised.
The Force has vowed to track down those still at large and establish their roles in the crimes.
For communities affected by the violence, the immediate consequence is a renewed security operation, and the prospect of answers to a series of killings that have remained under investigation.
