Ebonyi: Weekenders Magazine Urges Nwifuru To Free Remaining Amasiri Detainees

As calls grow for justice and reconciliation in communities affected by conflict, the Executive Director of Weekenders Media Commercial Limited, publishers of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has urged Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to order the immediate and unconditional release of the remaining Amasiri indigenes still in detention over the community crisis.
Idam commended the Ebonyi State Government for the earlier release of some detainees, describing it as a positive step towards rebuilding confidence.
However, she argued that genuine reconciliation would remain incomplete while other detainees continue to be held.
She stressed that every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional rights of liberty, fair hearing and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, calling on the governor to demonstrate fairness and compassionate leadership by ensuring no innocent person remains behind bars.
According to her, the continued detention has inflicted emotional and economic hardship on affected families, leaving many children without adequate care and elderly parents uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.
She also warned that prolonged detention could undermine ongoing peace-building efforts in Amasiri, urging traditional rulers, political leaders, religious bodies, security agencies and community stakeholders to embrace dialogue and lawful conflict resolution.
Idam expressed confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to justice and urged him to seize the opportunity to promote healing and lasting peace through the unconditional release of the remaining detainees.
She reaffirmed Weekenders Magazine’s commitment to promoting justice, accountability, peaceful coexistence, good governance, respect for the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human rights.
