Sports Could Drive Over Half Of Nigeria’s GDP With Right Investment, FCC Chair Says

Nigeria’s sports sector holds far greater economic potential than is currently being realised, with strategic investment capable of transforming it into a major driver of national growth, according to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Committee of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), led by its President, Isaiah Benjamin, at the FCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Omidiran said sports could contribute more than 50 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if properly harnessed.

The former Nigeria Football Federation board member described sports as a powerful tool for national unity, youth development and economic prosperity, stressing that the Federal Government is committed to repositioning the sector to unlock its full potential.

A major highlight of the visit was Omidiran’s acceptance of her nomination as the first National Matron of SWAN.

She pledged to actively support the association and its programmes, assuring members that both she and the FCC would stand firmly behind the organisation.

Earlier, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin commended Omidiran’s leadership of the FCC, citing institutional reforms, transparency and stakeholder engagement.

He said the association’s decision to honour her was in recognition of her outstanding contributions to sports administration, public service and national integration.

Omidiran is expected to be formally decorated as SWAN’s National Matron during the association’s National Triennial Congress in August 2026.
