ECOWAS Parliament Takes Anti-Irregular Migration Campaign To Gambia, Senegal
For many young West Africans, the search for a better life often begins with hope but ends in exploitation, trafficking and modern slavery.
The is taking its campaign against irregular migration directly to citizens in The Gambia and Senegal, as part of efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe migration.
The Parliamentary Citizen Engagement Campaign, themed “One Journey, Many Risks. Ask First, Move Safely,” will run from 6 to 10 July 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, before moving to Dakar, Senegal, from 13 to 17 July.
The initiative will bring parliamentarians face-to-face with young people, returnees, survivors, community leaders and civil society organisations to discuss the dangers of human trafficking, forced labour, sexual exploitation and other forms of modern slavery.
Activities in The Gambia will include community town halls, testimonies from returnees and survivors, media outreach and a “Football for Awareness” event aimed at reaching young people through sport.
According to the ECOWAS Parliament, the campaign will also provide lawmakers with first-hand insight into the factors driving irregular migration and help develop practical recommendations to strengthen prevention, protection and reintegration efforts across West Africa.
