Amid growing concerns over online conduct within the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered officers and men of the Force to immediately cease unauthorised social media activities that could damage the institution’s image and professionalism.

The directive follows an increasing trend of serving police personnel creating videos, conducting live broadcasts and posting content on social media while in uniform or in situations that identify them as police officers without official approval.

According to the IGP, while social media remains a valuable tool for public engagement, its use must comply with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

He stressed that officers are prohibited from posting unauthorised content in uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing operational information, or using their status for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.

To enforce the directive, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments and Commanders nationwide have been directed to sensitise personnel and ensure strict compliance.

Supervisory officers will also be held accountable for violations within their commands.

The IGP further tasked the Force Intelligence Department and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) with strengthening monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers engaging in conduct inconsistent with the standards of the Force.

The Nigeria Police Force said the move underscores its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible communication while maintaining public trust and institutional integrity.
