CLO Warns Parties Against ‘Anointed Candidates’ Ahead Of 2027 Elections

As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Anambra State branch, has warned political parties that flawed primary elections could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and deepen public distrust in the electoral process.

The group called on parties to embrace transparent, free and credible primaries, stressing that internal democracy remains the bedrock of legitimate leadership and peaceful elections.

Speaking during a mobilisation and sensitisation exercise in Awka, the Chairman of the CLO in Anambra State, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme AMBP-UN, condemned manipulation, favouritism, godfatherism, intimidation and vote-buying in party primaries.

He maintained that credible primaries would reduce litigations, anti-party activities and political instability, while restoring citizens’ confidence in democratic institutions.

In a statement jointly signed by Ezekwueme, the Secretary of the organisation, Comrade Chidi Mbah, and Comrade Vincent Udeh, the group criticised the practice of selling expensive nomination forms to aspirants despite already endorsing “anointed candidates”.

The CLO noted that politicians are more likely to accept defeat when elections are conducted in a free and fair manner, warning that injustice within political parties often breeds bitterness and division.

The organisation further urged political parties to drastically reduce the cost of expression of interest and nomination forms, as well as campaign expenses, to encourage broader participation and strengthen democracy.
