INEC To Upgrade Staff Healthcare As Nurses Week Celebration Highlights Welfare Concerns

Amid growing concerns over workplace health and employee wellbeing, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has unveiled plans to strengthen healthcare services for staff through the renovation of clinic facilities and the acquisition of a bigger healthcare centre in Abuja.
Speaking during the grand finale of the 2026 International Nurses Week celebration at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Prof. Amupitan said the Commission had already begun due process for the renovation of its Kubwa Clinic following reports about the poor state of the facility.
He also disclosed plans to acquire a larger clinic facility in Area 10, Abuja, to improve healthcare access for employees, stressing that the demanding nature of INEC’s operations exposes staff to significant health and security risks.
The INEC Chairman described nurses as the backbone of healthcare delivery and commended their professionalism, compassion, and dedication to service.
He assured staff that the Commission would continue to prioritise welfare despite prevailing challenges.
The event, themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” featured goodwill messages from National Commissioners, healthcare professionals, and representatives of nursing bodies, who all emphasised the critical role nurses play in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Highlights included tributes to modern nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, presentation of awards to top INEC officials, and recognition of retired nurses for meritorious service.
