A leading figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State and aspirant for the Zamfara North Senatorial District, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resist any moves to militarise the upcoming APC primary elections in Zamfara State.
Speaking in Abuja during the screening exercise for aspirants, Shinkafi called for a free and fair process, warning against any interference that could undermine the credibility of the primaries.
The APC chieftain highlighted that the Shinkafi area has not produced a senator in the last 28 years, despite its substantial contributions to Zamfara State’s development and politics.
He expressed concern that the current senator, who is over 70 years old, has not delivered meaningful development to the district throughout his tenure.
Shinkafi, who described himself as younger, highly qualified, and a holder of a PhD, argued that Zamfara North is due for fresh and dynamic leadership capable of driving real progress for the people. He cautioned against the imposition of candidates, stressing that such a move would be rejected by the electorate.
“As an advocate of direct primaries, I believe consensus arrangements will only bring divisions to the party,” he said. “The APC must allow the people to freely choose their representative. Any attempt to impose a candidate will not only fail but will also weaken the unity of our great party,” Shinkafi declared.
He urged the party leadership to uphold democratic principles and ensure that delegates are allowed to exercise their choice without intimidation or coercion during the primaries.
