Empowering The Storytellers: NAWOJ FCT, German Embassy Trains Women Journalists In Investigative Reporting
In an era where the media remains central to accountability and social change, empowering women journalists with the right tools is increasingly seen as vital to strengthening democracy and inclusive storytelling.
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, in partnership with the German Embassy, has trained female journalists in Abuja on investigative and gender-sensitive reporting as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.
Speaking at the capacity-building session, Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, said the initiative was designed to equip women journalists with essential skills in investigative reporting, ethical journalism, gender-sensitive storytelling and leadership.
She stressed that women in the media must not only be visible but also empowered to shape narratives, promote accountability and drive social transformation.
The German Embassy’s spokesperson, Mr Felix Haala, said the collaboration was aimed at strengthening the voices and professional capacity of women journalists, noting that meaningful development cannot happen without their participation.
NAWOJ National President, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, described the partnership as commendable and urged female journalists to go beyond mere storytelling to become advocates for truth and agents of change.
Also speaking, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, represented by Treasurer Sandra Chukwugekwu on behalf of Chairman Grace Ike, reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, inclusivity and continuous training.
Media expert and CEO of Valour Communications, Dr Lemmy Ughegbe, charged participants to embrace investigative journalism and verify digitally sourced information to combat fake news, while former NAWOJ National President, Comrade Ladi Bala, called for more inclusive reporting that gives women greater visibility in the media space.
Participants described the training as insightful and impactful, saying it would significantly improve their professional practice and storytelling approach.
