Taraba Moves To Enforce Workers’ Compensation As NSITF Secures Landmark Deal

In a climate where workers’ welfare is increasingly tied to public trust, Taraba State has taken a decisive step to strengthen social protection and enforce compliance with employees’ compensation laws.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, sealed a strategic partnership with Governor Agbu Kefas during a high-level meeting at the Government House in Jalingo.

At the heart of the engagement was the expansion and strict implementation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), designed to protect workers in cases of injury, disability or death in the course of duty.

Faleye stressed that the scheme is more than a legal requirement, it is a critical social safety net that strengthens industrial harmony and reduces litigation risks for employers.

He proposed integrating ECS compliance certificates into Taraba’s public procurement process, meaning contractors bidding for state jobs would be required to show proof of compliance.

Governor Kefas welcomed the initiative and pledged full cooperation, directing key offices, including the Head of Service and Ministries of Finance and Local Government, to drive implementation.

He also approved the immediate constitution of a high-powered committee to interface with the Fund.

Highlighting his administration’s welfare agenda, the governor revealed that Taraba has already paid ₦5 billion to pensioners and expressed confidence that outstanding entitlements would be cleared before year-end.

With this partnership, Taraba positions itself at the forefront of structured social protection in the Northeast.
