Nigeria, Israel Seek Deeper Security, Tech Ties As Ambulance Donation Deal Takes Shape

As Nigeria battles porous borders and rising security threats, Abuja is turning to unlikely lessons from Tel Aviv, and lifesaving support is already on the table.

Nigeria and Israel are moving to deepen their strategic partnership, with talks focusing on border security, intelligence cooperation, health, technology and innovation.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made this known in Abuja while receiving the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria could learn from Israel’s experience in border management as the country confronts insurgency and terrorism, stressing that the Nigeria-Israel Joint Commission must be activated to unlock concrete cooperation.

She also welcomed Israel’s plan to donate up to 60 fully equipped ambulances, describing it as a crucial step towards strengthening Nigeria’s weak first-responder system and building an “ambulance culture”.

Ambassador Freeman said Israel is keen to expand ties with Africa’s most populous nation through sustained dialogue and official visits.

He confirmed that the ambulance donation, to be implemented with the Federal Ministry of Health, will begin with a pilot phase, alongside training for Nigerian personnel.

He added that Israeli agricultural technology would also be made available to support Nigeria’s food security drive.

Both countries had earlier agreed, during a high-level political dialogue in August 2025, to deepen collaboration on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, border management, technology, innovation, agriculture and tourism, signalling a push towards a more robust and practical partnership.
