Digital Media, AI Take Centre Stage As SWAN Storms Banjul For AIPS Africa Congress

As technology reshapes how sports stories are told, Africa’s sports journalists are gathering to redraw the rules of the game.

The President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr Isaiah Benjamin, has arrived in Banjul, The Gambia, to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 8th AIPS Africa Congress, opening on Friday, 6 February 2026.

Benjamin landed in Banjul on Thursday alongside the SWAN Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo was received by the Local Organising Committee and leaders of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG), with AIPS Africa President Abdoulaye Babou Thiam welcoming delegates from across the continent.

The congress, themed “Digital Media, AI and Ethical Sports Journalism in Africa,” is expected to spark high-level conversations on how emerging technologies can strengthen storytelling while protecting professional standards.

Benjamin expressed optimism that the deliberations would sharpen practice and set a fresh agenda for African sports journalism, citing Nigeria’s strong showing at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco as proof of growing influence.

Beyond the debates, the Banjul meeting is also seen as a key build-up to the AIPS global elections scheduled for April 2026 in Lausanne, Switzerland, making this congress both a moment of reflection and a launchpad for what comes next.
