Pope Honours Enugu Philanthropist For Building A Catholic Church Single-Handedly
In a time when faith is often tested by economic pressures, one man’s generosity has become a powerful testament to devotion, sacrifice, and community spirit in Enugu State.
Pope Leo XIV has conferred a special apostolic blessing on Enugu-based philanthropist Mr Steve Mary Amaechi Davidson Kanife for single-handedly building a Catholic church for his community in Ugwetiti, Amansiodo-Oghe, Ezeagu Local Government Area.
The papal blessing was formally presented by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, during the solemn dedication of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, which was fully funded and completed by Mr Kanife and his wife, Mrs Nneoma Kanife.
The dedication also featured the Confirmation of 74 parishioners, marking a major spiritual milestone for the growing parish.
In his homily, Bishop Onaga praised the benefactor’s faith, perseverance and obedience to God’s call, describing the building of a church as a rare divine privilege.
He noted that the project, completed within two years, was a reflection of clean hands and a pure heart.
“Not everyone is permitted by God to build Him a house,” the Bishop said, praying that Mr Kanife would be divinely rewarded for his sacrifice.
Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Kanife revealed that the vision to build the church came in 2021 through prayer and spiritual counsel, adding that despite financial challenges, he felt a strong conviction to prioritise God’s house over personal projects.
He urged wealthy individuals to use their resources in service to God and humanity, describing such acts as investments with eternal value.
The event attracted priests, community leaders, Catholic organisations and faithful from across Enugu and Onitsha dioceses, who commended the Kanife family for their uncommon generosity and faith.
