Speeding Truck Triggers Horror Crash On Abuja Corridor As 12 Die

What began as a routine Sunday journey ended in tragedy along the busy Yangoji-Abuja corridor, where speed and recklessness combined to claim twelve lives in a devastating multiple-vehicle crash.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that the fatal accident occurred at about 11:45am on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at Gada Biyu.

The crash involved four commercial vehicles, a trailer conveying coal, a commercial bus, and two commercial cars.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that excessive speed and dangerous driving were the likely causes of the crash.

The driver of the trailer was said to be driving beyond the legally prescribed speed limit when he lost control and rammed into already parked vehicles, triggering the fatal collision.

A total of 18 persons were involved in the incident, including adults and children.

Five victims died instantly at the scene, while seven others, who were rescued and taken to Abaji General Hospital, later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to twelve.

Three other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

FRSC operatives responded swiftly to the distress call, arriving at the scene within seven minutes.

The injured were evacuated, the deceased released to their families, and traffic was promptly restored to prevent secondary crashes.

The Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Kwali, has taken over investigations.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, described the crash as avoidable and commiserated with the bereaved families.

He warned motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, against speeding and reckless driving, stressing that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains crucial to saving lives.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to enforcement, public enlightenment, and stakeholder collaboration to reduce road traffic crashes across Nigeria.
